Figure of speeches are used when we write something and mean something else. For example, "Don't cry over spilled milk" is a figure of speech and it means, don't live in past and move on.
There are a lot of figure of speeches such as metaphors, similes, idioms, hyperbole, oxymoron, paradox, etc.
